The Apex Lifts Annual Construction Golf Day at Birchwood Park Golf Course has been excitedly marked in the calendar for months, and as Friday 7th of July approached, the players were eagerly anticipating the day’s events.
The outing began with what has become somewhat of a tradition; a full English fry-up to fuel sturdy swings, perfect putts and the ever-aspirational hole-in-one. After establishing handicaps and careful selection of teams, the competition was off to a strong start, with Adam Dewar and Gary Poynter battling it out to win nearest to the pin on the eighth hole. Shortly afterwards, muscles were flexed and biceps bulged as the 'Longest Drive' title was up for grabs, although it soon became evident that merely landing a shot on the fairway was a considerable achievement.
Spirits were roused and energy levels boosted by the provision of refreshments on course, powering an incredible race to victory which saw the two teams neck-and-neck until the very last hole. The winning team won by a single point, claiming the title of ‘Apex Lifts Golfers Extraordinaire’.
Celebrations and commiserations alike took place in the club-house, with drinks aplenty preceding a well-needed post-tournament dinner. Shortly afterwards, the prizes were presented by tournament organiser, Gary Ager and were as follows:
Team winners: Matt Rayner, Tom Jerome, Alan Simons & Matt Simons
Nearest the pin: Adam Dewar
Longest drive: John Roberts
Bottom Prize: Dan Knight
Booby Prize: Matt Simons
Guest Winner: Craig North
Last place was claimed by Dan Knight, who acquired a new set of plastic golf clubs, with Kieran Hunt winning the Peter Hambrook Left-Handed Putting Competition. Kevin Warnock, Steve Lockwood and Mick Desmond came in third, second and first place respectively.
We’d like to congratulate everyone who took part, and praise all the day’s winners. Until next year!
